The Art (not the craft) of the Gelli Plate @ Hare Hill Barn

Wednesday 28th and Thursday 29th September 10 – 4pm

Hare Hill Barn, Cartmel Fell, Grange-over-Sands LA11 6NZ

You will not fail to be impressed by the setting of Hare Hill Barn.  The open light filled space of the the barn, with its full length picture window overlooking the fells and Morecambe Bay, will really encourage light, bright and bold art!

Let me take you on an arty tour of the world of the gelli plate!

I have found the gelli plate to be such a wonderful way to explore creativity and ideas which have then led naturally into my own painting.

Maybe you already have a Gelli plate that you have used a few times, created a few passable textured prints and then put away again to gather dust… or maybe you have recently become aware of  the Gelli plate on Instagram and want to delve in….

I am guilty of both of the above 🙂  So I decided to devise a short course that moves beyond the obvious, steers clear of the twee and asks as many questions as it gives answers. Drawing on ideas and concepts found in the work of a range of artists, I want to show how this versatile piece of kit can help us explore colour, texture, composition, collage, pattern and abstraction etc.

I have already run this course with my regular weekly group and the results have been so inspirational, and i will be able to share a selection with you on this course.

Over the two days I will guide you on the best ways to ‘warm up’ your plate in order to give you exciting and varied prints. We will be working with lots of texture using stencils, masks, image transfer, brushes, rollers etc. Using a variety of papers, from heavy cartridge to wafer thin tissue,  will help you hone your personal techniques as you develop layered prints and develop collages for an artist book.

By the end of the course you will have a mountain of wonderful prints, plus you will also have created a personalised artist book using your favourite ones. You can choose to work with a landscape or a botanical theme, still life or abstract; the opportunities here are endless.

Open to all levels and abilities, from beginners looking to ignite their creative spark to more advanced artists looking to widen their practice and embrace a new approach.

A full materials list will be supplied upon enrolment

You will need to provide your own materials including the gelli plate and acrylic paints. I have been using Golden fluid acrylics along with the more economical W&N Galeria range with their lovely pastel colours.

I am also asking that everyone provides their own lunch and refreshments. Hot and cold drinks will be available though you may prefer to bring your own.
