statement
My work is constantly evolving and shifting as I experiment with my own interpretations of the natural world around me.
I aim to capture the essence or atmosphere of a place or time through sketches and photography. These inform my memories back in the studio where the final pieces evolve using a wide variety of media.
I am fascinated by the marks and traces I can make upon paper, board and canvas and therefore my work, although having a fixed starting point becomes fluid and develops through the interraction between myself and the marks I am making. As a result representation becomes secondary to the painting’s surface where tonal and compositional harmonies and tensions structure the final result.
My work tends to be created in ‘series’ which reflect my interests, both in subject and medium at the time. I am currently experimenting with texture in my acrylic work alongside the development of my watercolours which seem to have a way of capturing the wet and wild nature of the Cumbrian Fells with its lost edges and shifting light.
